Cannabis Nutrient Burn: What It Is And Why It Occurs
Do you know this? Your Plants actually look quite healthy, the Buds grow like crazy – and suddenly the leaves get these nasty, brown tips. 🥀
Welcome to the world of nutrient burn – one of the most common small disasters that can happen to us growers.
In short: Nutrient burn is when your plant gets more food than it can even process. Imagine it like a small child who shovels too many candy into himself at once – at some point the system tips over. Instead of being happy about the extra nutrients, your lady is downright poisoned. Typical signs are dry, burnt leaf tips that slowly roll or curve inwards. It often starts very subtly – and if you don't check it in time, it can spread to the whole plant.
Why does this happen?
Honestly, mostly with the best of intentions: You just want to do too much good for your plants. A spoonful Fertilizer here, a booster there – and bang, the limit has been crossed. By the way, it is particularly dangerous with mineral fertilizers, which are absorbed very quickly. Organic fertilizers are a bit more forgiving, but they are not free passes either.
Many also underestimate how quickly the needs of the plant change, depending on the growth phase, pot size, light intensity or humidity. What was perfect yesterday can be too much tomorrow. 🌱⚡
The nice thing is that nutrient blight looks more dramatic than it usually is. If you intervene in time, you'll get things back under control pretty well. How? I'll tell you in the next section.
First aid: Cannabis nutrient burn - what to do?
Okay, don't panic, 😅 if you spot nutrient burn, it doesn't mean that all your grow is lost. The important thing now is to stay calm and act systematically.
Here's a little step-by-step guide on how to get your plants back on track:
1. Stop fertilizing immediately!
As tempting as it may be, it's time to slow down. No boosters, no additives, just water for now.
2. Rinse, but with brains.
If the damage is already clearly visible, you should gently flush the substrate (also called "flushing" in grower slang).
In concrete terms, this means: Water your plants with clear, stale water (pay attention to the pH value!) and make sure that there is plenty of water running out at the bottom. This helps flush excess salts out of the soil or medium. 🚿
3. Check the pH value.
Sometimes the cause is also a messed up pH value, which makes nutrients inaccessible. So feel free to measure the drain water. Values between 6.0 and 6.5 are ideal for soil, slightly lower for hydro.
4. Less is more.
The next time you fertilize, it's better to use the rule of thumb "less is better". Start with half the recommended dose and see how your plants react.
Your girls will thank you! 🌿
5. Be patient.
Unfortunately, leaves that have been burned once do not turn green again. But: Look at the new leaves! If they grow back fresh and healthy, you're on the right track. 🙌
